Burnie's Guide to Georgia

My all time favorite small town in Georgia is Colquitt in Miller County way down of the Ga-Fl border. Colquitt is famous for being the town that birthed Swamp Gravy and they have a festival and conduct some part of the Swamp Gravy play at their rehabed Cotton Hall Warehouse in April each year. Then you can drive on over to Jack Wingates Lunker Lodge on Lake Seminole (in Seminole County). Another interesting town is Buena Vista to see the Elvis Museum and visit the drug store on the corner that has an old timey fountain with cherry cokes and such. Parrott Georgia is not far from Americus and it is (or used to be) and ole town that just opens on the weekends. If you go out for a visit in the spring look up the Big Pig Jig which is located near Macon where they do real live bar-b-que with cook offs and such. If you go North of Atlanta on your way to Chattanooga you need to visit Summerville and Howard Finster's home place. He was a folk artist that made something out of everything although I believe his family got in a squabble and split up some of his stuff. He was supposed to have art in the big museums in New York and around the world. Closer to home is Shady Dale and East ???? down Ga Hwy 87 on your way to Macon where they have the Whistle Stop Cafe famous from Fried Green Tomatoes. I need a Ga map to look up some more small towns but these come to mind easily. When we go to Hilton Head to check on condos or for some R&R I like to drive down Ga Hwys 15 and 441 to see what has developed and changed over the years. When I was with UGA we traveled these roads on a weekly or at least monthly basis and could keep track of things. Now it is a ... "wow look at that" ... trip for us. If you have time and want to just mosey along take the Historic 441 trip from Clayton up North to Waycross down South and stop at antique stores and small joints along the way. It is fun. Also, Ga Hwy 27 on the western side of the state is an interesting drive...often long streches of land but it is the major travel corridor (other than the Inter-states) N-S along the Ga-Ala border.
