FLIP FLOP

FLIP FLOP
Margaret E. Holt
1/30/12
On this latter-day of January
In the season Dean Rusk tagged silly,
I’m reminded of the grown-down adults
Men and women at public podiums
Revitalizing the diminished language of their playgrounds,
Expanding snarky lexicons beyond pre-school deadlines.
FLIP FLOP
I like to say “flip flop”.
I like to hear “flip flop”.
As I walk I see “flip flop”:
The courageous first daffodil basking on the edge of my garden,
The Christmas cardinal exposed against the dark green cedar.
I think of Jimmy Buffett in Margaritaville,
Flip-flopping in the sand or snow.
Silly vision. Mr. Rusk was right about the season.

Imagine how noisy centipedes would be if they wore tiny flip flops.
