Summer Journal 2012, August 1
Of course, the first thing I did was read the voting results and the happiest news was that Doug McKillip had been defeated. Hope lives on. Whew! Yesterday was somewhat a feminist experience. If you follow my journals for many years, you realize (of if you've been here like Addie) that most of the people who go to the watering holes for ouzo are men. But yesterday, Maria who owns the Pizza Store (very successful young business woman), and Stella Kokkini our botanist professor friend, showed up at Sultana's. Stell was a big hit and the envy of all the men. Here are some photos:
This was a happy turn of events also because just before we met with them, we had the Peugeot checked out suspecting their might be a gas leakage. Fortunately there were no leaks, but the old jeep was in the lot, and it was like going to a graveyard, since we had driven it for more than twenty years. It served us well, but now it is kaput.
Farewell Old Jeep, You Served Us Well
While I was sitting at Sultana's and Stell was banking, I spotted our friends, Anya and Helena from Pottsdam returning from the lykee shopping. It was a happy reunion, because I didn't expect to see Anya this summer. We met up with both of them at Milos later and learned that they had hitch-hiked part of the way to Ierissos, mother and daughter. What amazing stories of what happened as they made their way here.

Feminist Tuesday ended with a great lunch at Christo's. Stell had moussaka and I had colokithia in a rich lemon sauce. We spent the evening at Stavraqu, where a new card match was started and we are tied. We probably should have gone to the village because a huge protest against the gold mine got underway and we could here the speakers even way up here. Of course we are aligned with those who want the Canadians to go home and stop polluting the area, but be sure the government favors the exploitation.
Ah, but I will only spend my day celebrating the end of the McKillip reign. Also, I had Stelios Foras install an outdoor shower, so when we all return from the beach we can rinse off outside.
Oh yes, here's a quotation from Lost Prophet that those of you who know me will understand why it caught my attention: "As 1960 ended, Rustin prepared for a trip to India. The War Resisters International was holding its tenth triennial conference there, the first time it would meet outside of Britain. The American delegation was small. Besides Rustin, it included Willoughby, the head of CNVA, and Jeannette Rankin, the first woman to serve in the U.S. Congress, and the only elected American official to have voted against participation in both world wars. Friends like Bill Sutherland and Michael Scott attended, altogether, sixty-four countries were represented."
